Windows can be a big and confusing world. There are multiple configurations and materials to choose from.

Let's start with the different window operations.  There are 6  main types of window operations. Fixed, single hung, double hung, sliding, casement and awning windows.

1. Fixed window or sometimes called a picture window. This is a fixed window that doesnt open.

2. SIngle hung windows operation is when there is two seperate window sashes and the top is fixed and the bottom opens to the top.

3. Double hung windows is when there are two seperate window sashes and the top and bottom move up and down independently

4. SLiding window are windows that slide to the side. SOme windows have one fixed side and some have 2 operational panels.

  Vinyl Windows

5. Casment windows open like mini doors. You can have them open out or in

Next lets discuss the different window materials. There are 4 main window materials available now.

-Wood

- Vinyl

-Aluminum

-Steel

There are advantages and disadvantages with each type.

6. Awning windows are windows that open from the top or bottom.

Wood windows are the orginal window. Wood windows have been used for decades. The main drawbacks with wood is they rot and they cant be painted dark colors. Most people want darker color windows now and some have painted their wood windows dark only to find them peeling and cracking within a year or two.

Vinyl windows were the first big innovation in windows. Finally there was a maintenance free window solution that doesnt rot. Vinyl or composite windows continually improve and get better. They are generally more affordable than other windows. The main drawback is they can expand or contract with temperature changes which can allow air to come in. There are higher end brands that have mostly elimintaed this issue.

  Steel Windows

Aluminum windows are the next big innovation after vinyl. With the popularity of black windows manufacturers had to find materials that can handle the darker colors and heat. Aluminum windows have a nice modern look that is desrable.

The main drawbacks with aluminum is the price.

Aluminum windows tend to be the most expensive. Aluminum windows also have more material around the glass than steel so you may have less glass compared to steel windows.

  Aluminum Windows

STeel windows are very similar to aluminum windows. they offer that slim look with maximum glass and can handle dark colors. Aluminum and steel windows come in what called thermally broken which means the outer material that is exposed to the elements does not come in contact with the inside of the home material so it doesnt conduct cold an heat.

Steel is stronger than aluminum so you can get less material around the glass than aluminum or vinyl. The main drwaback with steel can be corrosion over time and heat. Steel tends to get hot to the touch.
